My Name is Elon James White...: We Have A Serious Problem. #TrayvonMartin ⇢

To raise awareness about the #millionhoodies march and general online campaign I’ve posted the picture below on my social networks. This was the response on one of them.

[REDACTED]: Um no. This guy IS suspicious. I would totally purse clutch and traffic dodge to avoid and I’m not sure of…

When you walk to the edge of all the light you have and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen: There will be something solid for you to stand upon, or, you will be taught how to fly.”
— by Patrick Overton
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

A spoof of Glee.

And of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” — in the same video.

Yes, this is all kinds of awesome.

(And the new season of Sesame Street starts Monday.)

I love Sesame Street.

This part comes in exactly 44 minutes into the film and I’m singing along with every adlib he makes.

I should probably watch this movie one day…

My love affair with Prince started with this scene.

Dear Italian Vogue: Slave Earrings… Go to Hell!

This little gem popped into my Twitter feed a few times today. Is there a word shortage going on? Slave earrings…really? Link: http://www.vogue.it/en/vogue-gioiello/shop-the-trend/2011/08/hoop-earrings

Quoted from the article:

Jewellery has always flirted with circular shapes, especially for use in making earrings. The most classic models are the slave and creole styles in gold hoops.

If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern Unites States during the slave trade, the latest interpretation is pure freedom. Colored stones, symbolic pendants and multiple spheres. And the evolution goes on.

The author makes the slave trade seem like an all expenses paid vacation. What kind of deluded reality does one have exist in to make this level of thoughtlessness and disregard ok? Where are the editors, does anyone even care anymore? It seems to be open season on Black people. These little “slips” are occurring much more frequently in mass media. Many heads are still spinning from the “Re-civilize Yourself” ad by Nivea that was featured in Esquire earlier this week. Now this article makes direct references to slavery and tries to make light of hundreds of years of brutal oppression, “the latest interpretation is pure freedom.” It’s a slap in the face. No, more than that it’s a desecration of the lives of my ancestors. Mass media needs to do better and we need to hold magazines (and their associated websites) accountable.

Socializing is as exhausting as giving blood. People assume we loners are misanthropes just sitting thinking, ‘Oh, people are such a bunch of assholes,’ but it’s really not like that. We just have a smaller tolerance for what it takes to be with others. It means having to perform. I get so tired of communicating.

I need monthly, sometimes even weekly “hermit time”.  Without it I begin to shutdown.

Do stuff. Be clenched, curious. Not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention. It’s all about paying attention. Attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.
